Here is a selection of the many special events held at Hemyock Castle, Hemyock village, and the surrounding area:

This Year's Heritage Open Days:

Each Autumn during Heritage Open Days, many buildings across Britain and the rest of Europe are opened specially to the public. Hemyock Castle is open for free on Heritage Open Day & usually has a special exhibition. Nearby St Mary's Church is also usually open.

Hemyock Castle and Village organize special exhibitions, tours and events. In 1998, Hemyock Castle hosted a special exhibition of hand made crafts and photographs from members of the Janashakthi Bank, a self help micro credit union based in Southern Sri Lanka:

Anniversaries of D-Day 2005 & 2015:

In 1995, as part of the Hemyock Commemorations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Allied Victories in Europe and Japan (VE Day and VJ Day), Margaret Sheppard and Norman Lowman collected first hand accounts from over eighty resident of Hemyock, of life during the Second World War.

The adapted extracts published here in 2005, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day, give a flavour of these rare stories from a wide variety of eyewitnesses.

In 2015, to commemorate the 70th anniversary, the original book text has been extensively re-edited and re-published as a Kindle Book: Memories of War. The photos have been uploaded to YouTube as a series of HD slide shows. DVDs of these slide shows are available.

The complete WWII "Box Set," Hemyock Memories Volume 5, contains all the WWII volumes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 covering life during World War II 1939-45. These Memories of WWII Kindle books contain eyewitness accounts by residents of Hemyock, of their life during WWII, both serving overseas and on the "Home Front."

Queen's Golden Jubilee 2002:

Celebrations to mark sixty years since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne.

Illuminated Autumn Carnivals:

Each Autumn, between September and November, towns in Devon and Somerset host spectacular cycles of carnivals. The Bridgwater Carnival early in November, is reputedly the largest illuminated carnival in the world. The Somerset Carnival website provides a list of events throughout the UK.

Originally probably based on celebrations after the Harvest, these West Country carnivals now contain an extraordinary variety of decorated floats and dancers, ranging from individual efforts to huge articulated illuminated floats taking months to build and costing thousands of pounds. It is hard to believe that hidden somewhere under these lavish decorations are the basic compulsory building blocks: Humble farm tractors and trailers! Carnivals are highly competitive with prizes awarded in several classes.

Major carnivals can take three hours to snake slowly through the towns, collecting for local charities. The streets are packed with friendly local people.
