Coins for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

This 1953 presentation set commemorating the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II shows the British coins in circulation before decimalization on 15th February 1971. It contains English and Scottish designs of the shilling.

The farthing was later withdrawn. The crown was minted only for ceremonial events.

British Money - Pre-decimalization:

Farthing:

¼ penny. Small bronze coin.

Halfpenny:

½ penny. Small bronze coin.

Penny:

1 "old" penny. Large bronze coin.

Threepenny Bit:

3 pence. Small thick 12-sided coin.

Sixpence:

6 pence. Popular small silvery coin.

Shilling:

12 pence. Small silvery coin.

Florin:

2 shillings. Large silvery coin.

Half-crown:

2 shillings and 6 pence. Large silvery coin.

Crown:

5 shillings. Large silvery ceremonial coin.
Note. The modern decimal crown has a face value of £5.
